Matthew Treviño, bass
Described as a "bass of rare talent" (San Francisco Chronicle) and "simply mesmerizing" (The Tennessean) Matthew Treviño is proving to be one of today's most sought-after young basses. In the current season Matthew debuts with Vancouver Opera as Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Intermountain Opera as Leporello (Don Giovanni), and with the Brevard Symphony (Beethoven 9). He returns to Opera Coeur d'Alene to sing Colline (La Boheme) and to Opera Omaha to sing the role of Ashby (La fanciulla del West).
Highlights for the 2014-2015 season include Count Ribbing/Tom (Un ballo in maschera) and the duke (Roméo et Juliette) with Austin Lyric Opera, Monterone (Rigoletto) with Opera Omaha, the role of Eddie in Carly Simon’s opera Romulus Hunt in Nashville, the King (Aida) with the Aspen Music Festival, and the role of The Ghost in Gordon Getty’s new opera The Canterville Ghost in Leipzig.
Other recent highlights include Mr. Treviño’s company debut as Hobson (Peter Grimes) and as Sparafucile (Rigoletto) with the English National Opera, Colline (La bohème) for the Florentine Opera, Dr. P (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat) with the Nashville Opera, Leporello (Don Giovanni) for Opera Colorado, Sparafucile and Monterone (Rigoletto) for the Lyric Opera Baltimore and Opera Memphis, and a debut with the Saint Louis Symphony (Messiah) under Christopher Warren-Green.
Other appearances have included Pistola (Falstaff) for Opera Cleveland, Nourabad (Les pêcheurs de perles) for Syracuse Opera, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) for San Antonio Opera, and Colline (La bohème) for Opera Carolina, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Fresno Grand Opera. He has performed the roles of Angelotti (Tosca), Ramfis (Aida), and Commendatore (Don Giovanni), and, under the auspices of the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, Simone (Gianni Schicchi), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte). Most recently he appeared as Timur (Turandot) at Austin Lyric Opera, the King (Aïda) for Arizona Opera, Baron Douphol (La traviata) at Nashville Opera, Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) with the Opera Theatre Company in Ireland and he made his role debut as Don Giovanni with Opera Naples.
Highly regarded for his acting and in particular for his comedic Gilbert and Sullivan performances, Mr. Treviño has appeared as Dick Deadeye (H.M.S. Pinafore) at Lyric Opera of Kansas City and at Opera Carolina and the Sergeant of Police (The Pirates of Penzance) at the Fresno Grand Opera.
Mr. Treviño is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, Texas and was a finalist in the Loren L. Zachary Foundation Competition, Dallas Opera Guild Competition, Fort Worth Opera’s McCammon Voice Competition, Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year Competition, and the recipient of the Thomas Stewart Award for Vocal Excellence at Baylor University.

Nyle Matsuoka, piano
Austin-based pianist Nyle Matsuoka enjoys a rigorous career as a vocal coach and chamber musician. A versatile and engaging performer, he has been featured around the country in the Green Recital Series, the Lakes Area Chamber Festival, and in solo performances with the Utah State University Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with artists such as conductor Richard Buckley, conductor Stephen White, conductor Gary Wedow, mezzo-soprano Ginger Costa-Jackson, soprano Sara Gartland, bass Matthew Treviño, mezzo-soprano Cindy Sadler, bass-baritone Ryan Kuster, soprano Cindy Dewey, and the Fry Street Quartet.
Nyle joined Austin Opera as Principal Coach and Pianist during the 2014/2015 season. Under the direction of Maestro Richard Buckley, he has played for productions of Un ballo in maschera, Roméo et Juliette, and Don Giovanni. In addition to serving as rehearsal pianist, he also remains an active performer with the company, playing for masterclasses, outreach events, and concerts.
In addition to Austin Opera, Nyle has worked as a coach and pianist for Wichita Grand Opera, Arizona Opera's Marion Roose Pullin Opera Studio, Wolf Trap Opera, the University of Texas’ Butler Opera Center, and the Franco-American Vocal Academy. In addition to his operatic work, he has served as staff pianist for the ballet program in the University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance and has played for the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive.
He previously held both Music Director and Assistant Music Director positions with Spotlight on Opera, a community-based opera troupe in Austin, TX founded by Cindy Sadler. During his tenure with the organization, he acted as Music Director for productions of Dido and Aeneas and Suor Angelica, principal pianist and coach for productions of Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro, as well as music directing and coaching several scenes programs and concerts.
Nyle holds a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano from the University of Texas at Austin, where he held a teaching assistantship, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Utah State University, where he graduated magna cum laude with university and departmental honors.
