DIE WINTERREISE

A depressed and gloomy Franz Schubert spoke candidly to his friends, "Come to my Schubertiaden today and I will play you a cycle of terrifying songs; they have affected me more than has ever been the case with any other songs."

Die Winterreise or Winter Journey is a song cycle of 24 songs for male voice and piano composed by Franz Schubert with words by poet Wilhelm Müller. In 1827, he worked on Die Winterreise as he was dying of syphilis. In this most deeply felt masterpiece, Schubert perfectly captures the torrent of emotion of a wanderer alone with his sorrows. A young man tormented because his beloved has married another. His heart is broken as he sets out in the deepest winter to escape memories of her.

Theodor Carlson, Baritone
Mi-Jin Kim, Piano
