Songs for the Celebration of the Passage of Time - Text by Max Whittaker
Performed by: Brooke Clark Gibson, mezzo-soprano, Brian Bentley, piano
1. Haiku
2. Elegy
3. River of Time
Notes from the composer, Max Whittaker:
Throughout my transition into college, I have gone through quite a few emotions, One of the biggest being nostalgia. I feel as though it is good to look fondly at the past, but to make sure that it doesn't get in the way of one's future. Each song in this cycle represents some
sort of passage of time. It is meant to celebrate time and to remind us to appreciate the moments we have.
- Max Whittaker
1. Haiku
Twenty first still June
A warm, daunt-ing sun silenced
Betrayed by the dark
2. Elegy
oh
God spare me my grasp fading and yet I yearn life ahead of me
but still
Still it is
Clear clear to me what has come for me and life goes on still
still without me.
3. River of Time
Be still little darling and let me look at you
The river of time flows for ever more silently
I remember when you were so soft and small and young and cute
And now look at you with your face so mature now
I’m proud of who you’ve become
Even though I still see that child in your eyes
But no! You are at least ten times as big and strong as can be
How did I let that happen
Be still little darling and listen to my words
Hold on to these moments before they’re gone
For before long
